REBOUND DRILL
SETTING UP THE DRILL Place a cone on the 25 yard line, in line with the middle of the goal. Then place cones at the top left and top right of the D, just a yard or so outside of the D. The balls are all on the cone that is on the 25 yard line.
HOW IT WORKS 1. The cone on the 25 yard line is the start. The player passes the ball to the player on the left cone, (with a good hard accurate push pass). 2. When the player receives the ball they must put the ball with their first touch into a good shooting position, and then with their second (maybe third depending on their first touch) put the ball on target. 3. The player who made the pass then follows his pass (to the top of the D) and replaces the shooter on the cone. The shooter then goes to the back of the queue. 4. This is then repeated on the right hand side and you alternate from left to right until you have no balls left, then you collect them and do it again.
WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES FOR THIS DRILL? 1. To give good quality passes to the person you are passing to. 2. To have a good first touch. 3. To put the ball on target, with decent power on the shot. 4. To shoot from as close to the line as possible. 5. To get the shot off as quickly as possible.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE? 1. Bad passes from the 25 yard line. It is a shooting drill, but the passing is a part of it. 2. Bad first touch, people thinking about the shot before they receive the ball. 3. Trying to hit the ball too hard. 4. People want to score, so they take their time, take the ball too far in and then lose the whole idea of the practice. 5. PEOPLE MISSING THE TARGET. If you have to take a bit of the power off the shot in order to hit the target, then do so. A ball hit 75 miles an hour wide, is NOT better than a 15 mile an hour shot down the middle.
REBOUNDING DRILL There are two common things that people do wrong when they rebound. The first is that they are still in motion when the shot is struck and the other is their body position in the circle. When you are rebounding you should always look at the person on the ball taking the shot. The age old saying keep your eye on the ball. You need to do this as well in order to know when the shot is being struck, because as soon as you see this, you must stop your body movement and get into a position to receive a rebound, should it come your way. The reason that you must be stationery when the shot is struck is that your bodies reaction speed goes down significantly when you are in motion. If you are still in motion then your first movement will be to evade the ball, instead of to try and stop the ball. The body position is low with the stick low to the ground. When you stand tall, you will miss the ball because you must first bend down, before you can get to the ball. Try it you will be amazed at the extra rebounds that you pick up. The distance that you should be from the goal when the shot is taken is about level with the penalty flick spot. Too close and the ball will either pass you by or hit you. Too far back and you won't be able to get to any rebound that stays close to the keeper.
SETTING UP THE DRILL The set-up for this drill is exactly the same as the first one, so the two practices run in to one another very well.
HOW IT WORKS 1. The player on the 25 yard line starts the drill again, by passing to either of the two cones at the top of the circle. (with a good hard accurate push pass) 2. The player who receives the ball, stops the ball and plays in directly back to the player on the 25 yard line (with a good hard accurate push pass). 3. Once the player receives the ball back on the 25 yard line, he runs to the top of the D and shoots. 4. As he is doing this the two rebounders have made their way into the D and get into their rebounding positions. 5. All three players play until the ball is either in the goal, or out of the circle.
WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE DRILL ? 1. To hit the target with the first shot. 2. Two get into the circle and get into the right body position. 3. To not let any rebounds get past you at all. 4. To take quick early shots once you have received the rebound. 5. To not the leave the circle without having scored, unless the keeper has kept well.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON MISTAKES THAT PEOPLE MAKE ? 1. Again poor passing from both players. 2. Missing the goal with the first shot because they are trying to hard to score. 3. Looking at the goal and not the player as the shot is taken. 4. Standing upright, instead of the low body position. 5. Still moving as the shot is being taken. 6. Giving up because of any single mistake. Do not leave the circle until you know for sure that you still can't score a goal. Again this is a repetitive practice that you do for as long as you feel you need to. To make it more game like you can add in defenders that start on the short corner push out lines, and join the practice when the first shot has been taken. This pressures the attackers into taking the rebounds quicker. 90% of goals come from rebounds, think of how many goals your team could start scoring, by just doing this for 15 minutes a week. If you try this practice then please let me know how you get on with it. You can e-mail me or fill in the feed-back form. |
